Doctor Who: The War Games (2017) by SteveAndrew Doctor Who: The War Games (2017) by SteveAndrew
Something I've been planning for ages: an alt-universe which imagines the TV episodes as graphic novel front covers. Done in the style of David Roach's fantastic covers for the Doctor Who Magazine comics collections. This one would be for the entirety of season 6, starting with an adaptation of The Dominators and culminating in the epic 10-part The War Games. This is what the DWM collections do - put together a run of stories for a year and name the book after the most prominent tale. I was going to do what they do and list all the writers for the season at the top, but that would just confuse things. So, I fulfilled a long-term dream and had my name alongside Terrance Dicks, because I can.

This was a bit of en epic in itself - I started it in December and have only just finished. Don't know why it took so long: I was happy with it, then I wasn't, then I was. I went back and forth so many times.

I hope you like it - I have many more planned!

(Oh, forgot to mention - this is FANART and is totally unauthorised by the BBC, I just added their logo to add an air of authenticity.)

Amazing cover! The War Games is definitely one of my favourites. There's basically no indication when they seemingly arrive in WW1 that this will turn out to be perhaps the most consequential story ever. The sense of escalation and the Doctor's mounting desperation is so well done I always forget it was apparently written at the last minute after two other scripts fell through.

That's what most amazed me about The War Games - it was only done as a last minute replacement. Dicks and Hulke just completely worked their magic. I first watched it a few years back and thought it dragged in a few places but was mostly enjoyable. Then I rewatched it last year and loved it even more. So many great moments and such a great swansong for Troughton. Mac Hulke's novelisation is pretty good too.

Doctor Who is like coal- when it's put under pressure, it turns into a diamond!

Wasn't this story one of the ones that the BBC supposedly purged all or most of all?  I know back in the day, the legends say they wiped a lot of the tapes for re-use.

Fortunately The War Games was one of the stories that survived intact (or was retrieved at some point.) I totally recommend it - it's maybe my favourite Troughton story. Drags slightly in places, but stick with it. Towards the end you really get a sense that the Second Doctor knows he's completely out of his depth.

I know the basic story- he finally had to call in the Time Lords and the whole thing led to his third regen into Jon Pertwee. Maybe it was retrieved, because I remember hearing about several boxes of films being found in a salt mine here in the US.  How they got from one place to the other is still a mystery.

Yeah - the retreval of some of the lost stories would make a great story in itself. I think the DVD of The War Games has been out for some time. Hugely recommended, I think it's a great story. One minor niggle (if I was to be picky) is that we don't get to actually see the regeneration at the end. But maybe they hadn't even cast the Third Doctor by that point. It makes for a very bleak ending.

Nice stuff! Last stories for Doctors always need to feel epic and awesome and you've managed it perfectly with this! Excited to hear you're doing this for other seasons too.

I'm sure the Doctor would say something like all the best ideas come from inspired madness! :) I think the Season Twelve one would be one I'd love to see sooner though since that's got some of my fav Tom stories.

Season 12: pure gold, that season. Easily my favourite.
