The Fourth Doctor 1 (2013) Inks by SteveAndrew The Fourth Doctor 1 (2013) Inks by SteveAndrew
The Doctor, Leela and K-9 explore a dangerous new alien world. And Leela is, naturally, fully tooled-up. My first TARDIS team and, while I wouldn't necessarily say they're the best, these 3 hold a special place in my heart. I just recently watched The Sun Makers and felt like a 6 year old again. (And I'm currently reading Gareth Roberts's fantastic version of Shada, which reminds me all over again just why I loved K-9)

This pic went through a few versions in the last few weeks. Originally it was going to involve Harry and Sarah, then just Leela, then K-9 sneaked his way in. And even after I finished it, it needed so much Photoshop tidying up. Leela's outfit has far too much shading and the background is rather too busy. I get the feeling it will only properly be finished when I colour it.

But whatever, it was great to get the 4th Doctor down on paper, finally.

That's amazing. The detail on Leela's outfit is brilliant.

I am left wondering who carried K9 down all of those stairs?

Thank you!

K-9 can hover. They couldn't show it on-screen with the dodgy effects available in the classic show. Also, he had fold-out missile launchers and could transform into a silver Lotus Esprit. Sadly the BBC budget in the 1970s just couldn't stretch to showing all this. Shame.

K-9 was one of my favorite companions. Didn't they also keep him around the longest? I know there was a Mark II. Then Sarah Jane received one from the Doctor- (Anyone remember "K-9 and Company"?) was it a Mark II or a Mark III?

I seem to remember he was around for some time in one form or another, I'm a bit hazy on the details. Mark 1 was with the Doctor & Leela for about half a season. Mark 2 was in the TARDIS for nearly 3 years before leaving with Romana.

As you say Mark 3 stayed with Sarah on Earth for a long time before going out in a blaze of glory in School Reunion. I always thought the 10th Doctor just repaired him, but apparently Sarah ended up with Mark 4.

So, depending on your point of view, yeah it's possible K-9 is one of the longest serving companions.

Yay! I love this TARDIS team and you've captured them beautifully. For some reason, I find Tom Baker's face to be one of the most impossible faces to capture of anyone ever in the universe, and you've captured him wonderfully.

(Also I really really want to cuddle K-9 - and Leela, but only if she puts down the crossbow first.)

Thank you! Yeah, I had to use a lot of photo reference for Tom.

Oddly, Dave Gibbons (excellent Dr Who artist in the early 80s) always said that he really liked drawing Tom's face because it was weird. He reportedly hated the switch to Peter Davison, because he had such a non-quirky face.

Seriously, you did a fantastic job.

(I usually just end up settling for what looks to me like a sort of Crazy Eyes Bob Dylan)

I can kind of see where Dave Gibbons is coming from, inasmuch as Tom's got that wonderfully expressive face, which I can see being useful when you're conveying a narrative, as opposed to Petey's, which is more subtle. As for me, I find something very pleasing for some reason about drawing the curvature of Davison's nose. Is this creepy?

Crazy eyes Bob Dylan? That would work!

I don't think finding pleasure in drawing Peter Davison's nose is at all creepy. I think it only tips into creepy when you have a basement shrine wallpapered with thousands of images of Peter Davison's nose, with a sturdy dentist's chair set up in the middle of the floor, ready for the day when you kidnap Peter Davison and do unspeakable things to him.

And what Who fan hasn't dreamed of that scenario at one time or another? ;-)

Crazy eyes Bob Dylan is, like, the only way I can make sense of his face XD

Yeah, umm, I really just find his to be a really nice profile to draw. I'm pretty sure my creepiest aspiration is probably becoming showrunner of Doctor Who. Less creepy?

(As for the basement shrine, well... I'm pretty sure that isn't just you, if it makes you feel any better)

Ha! I was just reading to my youngest boy a novelization of 3 Dr. Who stories from the Tom Baker run (adapted by Terrance Dicks); Genesis of the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen, and Doctor Who and the Loch Ness Monster. Nine years old and he's hooked! I will be sure to show him your piece.

I too received my first introduction to the Doctor via Tom Baker, as one of my old roommates at one point had recorded (almost) the entire run on VHS in her own youth. I think after that, one develops a proclivity toward long scarves quite naturally.

Oh, you have great taste! The Target books are fantastic books - short and perfectly pitched at kids.

I was rather a slow reader as a kid, and reading a Target was the first time I'd managed to read an entire book in less than a day. Revenge of The Cybermen was my very first Target - that Chris Achilleos cover with Tom and the Jack-Kirbyesque-energy-field was iconic! And Genesis is just wonderful. Those books still hold up well after all this time. :D

Oh that would have been great! It was a shame Tom regenerated with an almost entirely new TARDIS team - it would have been far more poignant if he'd been accompanied by an established character who'd been around for a few years.

Ha, you're right! :D That was unintentional, but it totally fits! I was referring to some of Frank Cho's martian / jungle imagery, but there's probably some sci-fi art rule that dictates something like:

"The more sinister the landscape, the more likely you are to find a mad scientist trying to build a body to house the brain of an evil Time lord."

Maybe when I colour it, I'll do it all in pink and green to subvert everyone's expectations!

Ah, me too - I love all Dr Who, but you never forget your first. I'm sure if I was born a few years earlier, I would have found K-9 far too cheesy. But to a 6-year old boy, robot dogs are the coolest things ever. :D

Exactly right on K-9. My memory was foggy on my early episodes so I had to double check if it was an actual character. K-9 seemed overly familiar but a little silly at the same time. not like Muffy the Daggit in the early Battlestar Galactica episodes.

Oh, Muffy...

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that K-9 was originally intended to be some bloke in a robotic dog suit, like Muffy. So glad they didn't go down that route. What they ended up with was silly and very very 70s, yeah, but in the hands of a decent writer K-9 could be genuinely funny and endearing. The delighted look on David Tennant's face when he meets K-9 in School Reunion perfectly captured what a lot of old-school fans were feeling when they watched the episode. Such a sweet moment. :D
