The Sixth Doctor (2012) Inks by SteveAndrew The Sixth Doctor (2012) Inks by SteveAndrew
The 6th Doctor and Peri starting a relaxing holiday on... erm, some planet somewhere...

Colin Baker's Doctor got a lot of flack at the time, but he is one of my favourite actors to have played the role. It would have been nice to have seen his Doctor mellow a bit over time as originally intended. I'd love to check out his recent Big Finish audios, as I hear that's exactly what happened. Damn short-sighted mid-80s BBC...

Sadly he was lumbered with some pretty bloody awful stories on TV, although I still love The Two Doctors and Revelation Of The Daleks. Trial Of A Time Lord was a real mess, but gave hints of a deepening friendship with Peri.

Ah, Peri...

Disclaimer: remember, likenesses are really not my strong point, as is clearly proven here! You've been warned: I may colour this someday - but I fear any monitor that displays it might burn out.

So I've got me a 6th Doctor hankering right now. Would you mind if I tried to color this?

Go ahead, help yourself! Be sure to wear some eye-protection - when coloured in, that jacket is hazardous to health. ;-)

Colin Baker is my favourite Doctor. I admit none of his televised stories are the best Who has to offer, but he is my favourite Doctor regardless. And while I haven't any of the Big Finish original stories, I did get their recreation of "The Nightmare Fair" for christmas, and it was a whole lot of fun to listen to.

Your picture makes me think of "Mindwarp" and the blue beaches and pink oceans of Thoros Beta. Weird place, that one.

This is lovely and I agree Colin Baker did not get a fair shake, which is a shame because he really, really wanted to be The Doctor

Thank you! Yeah he was a highly under appreciated Doctor - always the best thing in some fairly rough stories.

I mean he was supposed to go up against the Celestial Toymaker - that takes moxie.

And Peri was always a favorite companion of mine - you did a nice job with her in the picture. They had a nice relationship in The Mysterious Planet and she got almost as bad a send off as Col - and then he wound up with Carrot Juice. UGH.

Awesome and AWW-some.

Colin is my third favorite Doctor. Yeah, the Big Finish Audios have helped him.

Yay! One of my favourite TARDIS crews for all their scrappyness.

Thank you! Yeah, I think I might finally take a dip in the Big Finish pool. Can you recommend a good place to start with Colin's stories?

They are interconnected so I just started at the beginning.

Ar least they brought him back for the opening scenes in the USA movie. At least he got to do the regeneration scene- not all the doctors did.

Oh, this is adorable. I love all the details, their expressions (I think Peri is my favourite thing in this--how she's not drawn annoying or anything, but as a normal person), how they actually seem to be having fun and relaxing for a moment...awesome.

Thanks - I always thought Colin was an under-rated Doctor and there were hints that there was a deeper friendship between 6 and Peri that went beyond the near constant bickering we got on TV. Shame that the mid-80s BBC higher-ups had no patience.

And I always like the thought that there are moments of downtime between adventures. Where the Doctor just takes his companion to a planet where there's no real danger, but that it's just a cool place to go. Seeing the universe. :-)

Oh, yeah, definitely--on all of that. Especially on the thing with him and Peri--I always felt that they had this like, natural, equal chemistry that doesn't come happen all that often on the show.

And I've also always really liked bits where we briefly see them relaxing--it never _lasts_, but hey. It's also interesting to see more inside of the TARDIS, especially the more domestic or recreational areas. Like when Leela found the swimming pool, or how we get to see inside people's quarters, during Five's era. That kind of thing.

So yeah, total agreement all the way around, here. :)

I love these two, and you've captured them beautifully. I like it as line art by the way, but if your tempted to continue, why not keep it mono, but with a little more fill, to balance Peri's hair :)

Thanks!

I usually find I go a bit overboard with black markers (I'm an unrepentant Sin City fan of old!) But when I came to this picture, I panicked when I realised, "It's the Sixth Doctor and Peri - there is no black!"

But keeping it in monotone is a top idea, thank you! :-)

The only part of Trial i didnt like was Vervoids. I thought the rest of it was Fantastic!

I thought Vervoids had a lot of potential to be a great Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery, but was let down by the obvious lack of a budget. (As were most stories in the 80s). I loved the first story (Mysterious Planet?) - great idea and I still really love the reveal of the true identity of the planet.

I think the main problem I had was the whole Trial linking device. On paper it was a neat idea, but the constant cutting back and forth between the trial and the adventures could be jarring at times. And it meant the plots for individual stories couldn't be properly resolved until the very end.

But, that said, any Doctor Who was always better than no Doctor Who - and Colin was magnificent throughout. His constant jibes at the Junkyard were comedy gold. :-)

Also, I agree that the BBC mishandled the whole thing. John Nathan Turner did more to bring about the end of the original Who than any of the actors who played the Doctor.

I actually quite like Six, even as crabby as he tended to be. He was a bit of a throwback to the First Doctor, who tended, on the whole, to be rather short-tempered with humans because they weren't as smart as him.

But yeah, they mellowed him out a lot in the Big Finish audios. Not completely, thank heavens, because for me, part of Colin Baker's charm was that he wasn't as sweet and laid-back as Five (who I also adored).

Yeah - that's one of the things I liked about Colin, his Doctor is the one who got closest to Hartnell's interpretation of the role.
