Zatanna (2012) Inks by SteveAndrew Zatanna (2012) Inks by SteveAndrew
A slight redesign of Zatanna, Mistress Of Magic. She has a fairly iconic outfit, so I thought it would be an interesting experiment. And not that I have anything against fishnets, but they never seemed all that practical for a superhero. So, she's ended up with a slightly Victorian, circus ringmaster look, which kinda works.

I have an admission, I had real trouble drawing her legs, sometimes I have a mind-blank when it comes to anatomy. So I referred back to my She-Hulk from last year, to get proportions right.

Also, as I've never drawn any corsetry before, I referred to the lovely :icontanit-isis-stock: and a bit of :iconv-couture-boutique:

A coloured version will be on the way at some point. :D

A comic book super heroine with a body type that's.......realistic? What is this blasphemy?! :rage:

Ha, ha! Thank you! I have to confess when I was much younger I sometimes drew superheroines in "brokeback" poses. My female characters often headed into Liefeld territory. (Hangs head in shame...) I'm really trying to make up for that now.

But damn, anatomy's tricky - I often have to force myself to remember: 7 heads high, 3 heads across...

I loved that corset! The pose! N the way she is =). It's like... more... "real"; Most of ppl use to draw "almost unreal-shaped" girls.

Thank you very much! Yeah, I was going for a slightly classic look and I try to make most of my characters quite realistically proportioned. (I don't always succeed, but that's what I'm aiming for!)

Glad you liked it! :D

Brilliant and very subtle redesign! This is the kind of outfit I would have wanted Zatanna to wear in the New 52 instead of her gothy getup. Her classic outfit is too iconic but this is a great alternative.

Thank you!

Yeah, the new costume... hmmm, I don't mind it, it just doesn't really suit Zatanna (at least not classic Zatanna). The top hat and tails were what make her distinctive. Now, she just looks a bit... ordinary. But I guess when DC go for a full reboot, they can do anything. Still a shame though.

That's ok! Truthfully her costume is not the most grating change of all of them - I think the worst is probably Harley Quinn who whilst I respect doesn't have to be as wide eyed and cute in the main universe as she can be in TAS, the entire gothisation of her has thrown me completely. I was also a little sad to see Power Girl's old look go but I recognise why it needed to be changed and the new look's not bad... gonna miss the boob window though. ;)

But yes, I love characters to look distinctive, it's the same issue I have with them making Ivy have pink skin again, her green skin made her stand out perfectly.
